HSI Baltimore supports search for missing Maryland teen

Special agents from HSI Baltimore’s Frederick, Maryland office assist state and local authorities in the search for a missing 15-year-old teenager Mar. 2.

FREDERICK, Md. — Special agents from Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) Baltimore have teamed up with several state and local law enforcement agencies to search for a missing Maryland teenager.

Fifteen agents from HSI’s Frederick office joined the Frederick County Sheriff’s Office, the Frederick Police Department and the Maryland State Police to search for Limber Jocimar Lopez-Funez, 15, of Frederick, who was last seen on the evening of Feb. 24 near Alban Court in Frederick, along the Golden Mile.

“Locating Limber Jocimar Lopez-Funez is of utmost importance to HSI Baltimore,” said HSI Baltimore Special Agent in Charge James C. Harris. “We have committed manpower and resources from our Frederick office to assist state and local authorities in this search. HSI Baltimore remains committed to the safety of the residents of our Maryland communities, and we will continue to support our state and local partners in the search for Limber.”

Frederick police are listing Lopez-Funez as a "critical missing person” because he’s under 17 years old. Other factors, such as a person’s mental health or an inclination to harm themselves, can also contribute to the police listing someone’s status as critical.

Police say they are investigating whether Lopez-Funez is in immediate danger.

The search for Lopez-Funez began Feb. 25. Law enforcement personnel are still actively searching for him in Gambrill Park.

Residents of Frederick County and the city of Frederick may notice an increased police presence. Police have organized several searches in and around Frederick.

HSI Baltimore requests that members of the public with any knowledge of Lopez-Funez’s whereabouts contact the Frederick Police Department’s Crime Tip Line at 301-600-8477 or the HSI Tip Line at 866-347-2423. The HSI Tip Line is manned 24 hours a day, and callers may remain anonymous if they choose to do so.

Frederick Police request that anyone with information on Lopez-Funez call or text Detective Yackovich at (240) 549-4450 or email KYackovich@FrederickMDPolice.org.

Additionally, HSI Baltimore requests that area residents with cameras or video surveillance systems check their recordings and contact call the tip lines if they find anything helpful.

HSI is the principal investigative arm of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS), responsible for investigating transnational crime and threats, specifically those criminal organizations that exploit the global infrastructure through which international trade, travel, and finance move. HSI’s workforce of more than 8,700 employees consists of more than 6,000 special agents assigned to 237 cities throughout the United States, and 93 overseas locations in 56 countries. HSI’s international presence represents DHS’s largest investigative law enforcement presence abroad and one of the largest international footprints in U.S. law enforcement.
