Pennsylvania man pleads guilty in heroin trafficking conspiracy

HARRISBURG, Pa. – A Pennsylvania man pleaded guilty Tuesday to his role in a heroin trafficking conspiracy in 2012 and 2013. The investigation was conducted by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) Philadelphia, the Drug Enforcement Administration, Pennsylvania State Police, the Pennsylvania Attorney General’s Office, and Berks County Detectives.

Richard Carvajal, 57, of Reading, admitted to conspiring with others in Monroe County, Berks County, and elsewhere, to distribute and possess with intent to distribute heroin.

Carvajal was originally indicted by a federal grand jury in June 2013, and subsequently charged in a superseding indictment in March 2014.

He faces up to 20 years in prison and a $1 million fine when he is sentenced in January 2015.

The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Francis P. Sempa.
