Texas man sentenced for trafficking methamphetamine in New Mexico

LAS CRUCES, N.M. — A Texas man was sentenced Tuesday in federal court to 46 months in prison, followed by two years of supervised release, for trafficking methamphetamine. This sentence resulted from an investigation conducted by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s (ICE) Homeland Security Investigations (HSI).

Alejandro Carrillo, 38, of El Paso, Texas, was arrested April 23, 2014, after a search by U.S. Customs and Border Protection’s Border Patrol agents during a routine traffic stop on Interstate 25 in Doña Ana County, New Mexico revealed that Carrillo had concealed bundles of methamphetamine in his tractor-trailer. Carrillo was subsequently indicted July 16, 2014, and charged with possessing methamphetamine with intent to distribute.

Carrillo pleaded guilty Sept. 18, 2014. He admitting to possessing about 4.3 kilograms (9.4 pounds) of methamphetamine that he picked up from an individual in El Paso and was transporting to another individual in Denver, Colorado. Carrillo also admitted that he was to be paid $4,000 for a successful delivery of the methamphetamine.

The U.S. Border Patrol and the New Mexico Department of Public Safety assisted HSI in this investigation. Assistant U.S. Attorney Edwin Garreth Winstead prosecuted the case.
