Santo Carela, 60, was pronounced dead two days after he had been taken to the hospital, where he was admitted for additional diagnostic tests. Carela’s next of kin was notified of his death by the attending physician.
Consistent with ICE protocol, the Department of Homeland Security Office of Inspector General and ICE Office of Professional Responsibility were notified of the death as were appropriate state health and local law enforcement agencies.
Boch is the seventh detainee to pass away in ICE custody in fiscal year 2016.
Igor Zyazin, 46, was pronounced dead by paramedics shortly after 10 p.m. while en route to the hospital. Zyazin is the sixth individual to pass away in ICE custody in fiscal year 2016. His is the first detainee death at the Otay Mesa Detention Center in two years.
Jose Leonardo Lemus Rajo, 23, was transferred from the Krome Detention Center to the hospital April 26, after experiencing alcohol withdrawal symptoms using the Clinical Institute Withdrawal Assessment for Alcohol monitoring scale.
Rafael Barcenas-Padilla, 50, had been hospitalized since March 16 when he was admitted for treatment of possible pneumonia. He was treated in the hospital’s intensive care unit where he received constant monitoring.
Thongchay Saengsiri, 65, was transferred from the LaSalle Detention Facility via ambulance to the hospital March 17, after experiencing shortness of breath.
Saul Enrique Banegas-Guzman, 46, was initially taken from the LaSalle Detention Facility to LaSalle General Hospital in Jena, Louisiana, via ambulance Jan. 5.
Jose Manuel Azurida-Hernandez, 54, was transferred from the Adelanto Detention Facility to the hospital Dec. 19 after experiencing chest pains.
Juan Garcia-Hernandez, 39, was taken into ICE custody Aug. 27 after his stay of removal expired. He collapsed Monday afternoon outside the Florence Detention Center medical unit following a meeting with members of the facility’s medical staff. Efforts by Florence personnel and emergency responders to revive Garcia were unsuccessful. An autopsy is pending.
Nho Thi Nguyen, 61, was transferred to ICE custody from U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) June 28. On July 1, Nguyen collapsed while taking a shower at the Houston Contract Detention Facility.
Navarrette-Quintana is the fifth detainee to pass away in ICE custody during fiscal year 2015.
Jose de Jesus Deniz-Sahagun, 31, was transferred to ICE custody May 18 following his arrest three days earlier by U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) at the port of entry in Douglas.
Carlos Funez-Ochoa, 30, was apprehended March 15, 2015, by U.S. Customs and Border Protection's Border Patrol near Hidalgo, Texas. The next day, he was transferred to ICE custody and taken to the Port Isabel Detention Center in Port Isabel, Texas.
Raul Ernesto Morales-Ramos, 44, was admitted to the hospital Friday after experiencing some unusual bleeding. Subsequent tests indicated Morales appeared to have intestinal cancer requiring inpatient care and possible surgery. Morales, who had been under a physician’s treatment since his admission to the hospital, passed away Monday shortly after 4 a.m.
A 47-year-old El Salvadoran national, who was being held by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) since Oct. 2, passed away Thursday night at Metropolitan Methodist Hospital (MMH) in San Antonio.
On July 6, Garcia-Huezo became ill and was immediately transferred from ICE custody to the Laredo Medical Center (LMC). LMC hospital staff initially diagnosed him with cardiac arrest. A medical examiner will review the case regarding the cause of death.
Santiago Sierra-Sanchez was taken to the hospital early Saturday morning after Utah County Jail officials found him unresponsive in the jail's medical unit. He was transported by ambulance to the hospital where he was declared dead by doctors at approximately 4:20 a.m. The official cause of death will be determined by the Utah Office of the Medical Examiner.
A female citizen of Antigua in the custody of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) passed away Wednesday at the York County Prison.
Lelis Rodriguez, a Honduran national who has been in the custody of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) since July 22, passed away Wednesday, July 31, at Valley Baptist Medical Center (VBMC) in Harlingen, Texas from a cerebral hemorrhage.
Federico Mendez-Hernandez, 28, was last apprehended by U.S. Border Patrol May 9 on the Rio Grande River near Hidalgo and transferred to ICE custody three days later. On May 18, Mendez-Hernandez was transported to the Christus Spohn Hospital Kleberg in Kingsville after he reported symptoms compatible with rabies, which included anxiety, vomiting, trouble swallowing, shortness of breath and rapid heart rate.
Jorge Garcia-Mejia, a Guatemalan man in the custody of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and under criminal investigation by local authorities, passed away Tuesday at the Eloy Detention Center of an apparent suicide.
Elsa Guadalupe-Gonzales, 24, was found unresponsive in her cell Sunday evening by another detainee, who found her hanging.
Oldrich Tomanek, a national of the former Czechoslovakia who had been in the custody of U.S. ICE since April 2, passed away Thursday at Haskell Memorial Hospital (HMH) due to heart failure, based on a preliminary determination.
At the time of his death, he was awaiting removal from the United States.
