Fentanyl Trafficker Sentenced to Over 5 Years Following HSI Nogales Case

NOGALES, Ariz. — A southern Arizona man was sentenced May 8 to 63 months in prison, followed by 60 months of supervised release for fentanyl smuggling. Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) conducted the investigation in this case.

“HSI is resolute in our commitment to investigate those who attempt to infiltrate our communities and endanger the health and safety of the American public with deadly drugs,” said HSI Arizona Special Agent in Charge Francisco B. Burrola. “Let this sentence ring clear: Those seeking to circumvent our laws will be caught and brought to justice.”

Francisco Nicolas Orozco-Montijo, 28, a U.S. citizen residing in Nogales, Mexico, pleaded guilty on Feb. 5 to importation of fentanyl.

In March 2023, Orozco-Montijo applied for entry into the United States from Mexico via the DeConcini Port of Entry in Nogales, Arizona. During a search of his vehicle, U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents discovered over 50 kilograms of fentanyl concealed within the spare tire and rear quarter panels of the car.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Arizona in Tucson handled the prosecution.
