ICE HSI probe results in the 5-year prison sentence of a North Texas man for illegally importing methamphetamines
LAREDO, Texas – A north Texas man was sentenced for illegally importing more than 55 pounds of methamphetamines following an investigation conducted by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s (ICE) Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) with assistance from U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP).
Luke Law, 20, from Dallas, Texas, was sentenced April 14 in federal court to 60 months in federal prison to be followed by three years of supervised release. In handing down the sentence, the judge ordered the defendant to speak to high school students at least three times a year about avoiding drugs and avoiding the choices he made. Law pleaded guilty Dec. 1, 2021.
“While some may mistakenly view smuggling controlled substances as a path to a quick profit, the sentencing of Luke Law demonstrates that there are serious consequences for those who engage in criminal activity,” said Special Agent in Charge, Shane Folden, HSI San Antonio. “HSI will continue to work closely with our law enforcement partners to protect our communities and bring drug smugglers to justice.”
According to court documents, on June 6, 2021, Law attempted to cross into the United States after vacationing in Monterrey, Mexico. Authorities referred his vehicle to the secondary inspection area where a K-9 alerted to the presence of narcotics. An X-ray scan revealed anomalies behind the vehicle’s gas tank. Upon further investigation, law enforcement discovered a total of 29 bundles of meth wrapped in clear tape weighing approximately 25.16 kilograms. The drugs have an estimated street value of approximately $1.1 million.
Law remains in custody pending transfer to a U.S. Bureau of Prisons Facility to be determined in the near future.
