Readout from US Immigration and Customs Enforcement meeting with ACLU

WASHINGTON — On June 27, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement Chief of Staff Michael Lumpkin and Assistant Director for Partnership and Engagement Francey Youngberg met with American Civil Liberties Union representatives to discuss immigration enforcement, detainee rights, and what happens in the unfortunate event that a detained noncitizen dies while in agency custody.

Given recent changes in legislation and the evolving situation at the nation’s southwest border, it’s increasingly important for ICE officials to meet with concerned members of the public, including groups that advocate for migrants’ rights. These engagements fortify ICE’s commitment to maintaining transparency and continuing to build trust with the American people. They also ensure a shared understanding of the agency’s apolitical mission of enforcing the immigration laws Congress sets forth.

ICE engages with stakeholders nationwide, including state, local, tribal and territorial governments, elected officials, and law enforcement professionals. Agency representatives also meet with private-sector entities, faith-based and activism-based organizations, and colleges and universities to help dispel myths and ensure future decisions that fall under ICE’s purview are fact-based and data-driven, humane and effective.
