Readout of US Immigration and Customs Enforcement meeting with LaSalle Corrections
WASHINGTON — U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement Chief of Staff Michael Lumpkin met with leaders from LaSalle Corrections Nov. 20 to discuss detention standards, detained noncitizens’ needs and the partnership that enables ICE to maintain the highest standard of care for those in its custody.
LaSalle Corrections, a private detention contractor, is an important part of ICE’s detention system. Because the law requires ICE to detain noncitizens under Department of Justice immigration judges’ orders, those who have been transferred to ICE custody under immigration detainers, and those who pose national security and public safety threats. Regardless of the reasons the agency detains noncitizens, ICE detention is not punitive, and the agency and its partners strive to provide appropriate care for people in custody.
ICE officials regularly engage with private detention contractors, government officials, partner law enforcement agencies, private-sector entities, faith-based and activist organizations, and colleges and universities to ensure its future decisions are data-driven, humane and effective.
