Readout of US Immigration and Customs Enforcement visit to the South Texas Family Residential Center in Dilly, TX
WASHINGTON – U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement leadership visited the South Texas Family Residential Center in Dilly, Texas yesterday to tour the facility. While each facility is different, there is a shared responsibility across the federal government and private contractors to ensure appropriate care for those in custody. The agency continually adjusts its national detention system based on operational needs. The ability for the agency to remove individuals to their home countries, detain those who are mandatory detention and are a public safety threat is directly dependent on location and availability of detention space. ICE continues to modernize the immigration system and realize cost efficiencies across the operational landscape while continuing to work with DHS leadership and Congress to secure resources.
The South Texas Family Residential Center historically housed noncitizens in family groups. In December 2021, ICE ended family detention and the South Texas Family Residential Center transitioned to detain noncriminal single adult females and certain noncriminal males classified as low risk. U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement has a dedicated intergovernmental service agreement with the city of Dilley, Texas and the facility is operated by CoreCivic, a valued partner in the immigration detention space. The use of private detention contractors is a vital piece of the national detention system enabling ICE to execute its mission.
